Few pairs of words have become more hyped recently than “Big Data”. This couplet has become a much-lauded, but often poorly-understood, term in the tech and business worlds. Reams of consumer data are being used for “smart” advertising. However, the transformational power of Big Data in the life science and healthcare industries is only beginning to be tapped.

Mountains of medically-relevant data are being amassed from disparate sources such as microarrays, next-generation sequencing, wearable sensors, and electronic medical records. This data deluge is driven by the increasing throughput of these technologies and the ability to store the data, combined with decreasing associated costs. For example, the Human Genome Project took 10 years and $3 billion to appreciate 20,000 genes and 3 billion bases. Today, the goal of $1000 per genome in a single day may only be months away – a precipitous decline in time and cost outpacing Moore’s law.

With falling costs for greater technological capabilities, the potential of Big Data to improve health care in a commercially-viable way is approaching an inflection point. In Southern California, companies and hospitals have been taking notice- the UC Irvine health system recently implemented a large-scale data infrastructure project, and LA-based NantHealth unveiled a supercomputer network capable of quickly analysing a tumor genome and comparing it with data from thousands of cancer patients to allow personalized treatment.

As Thomas Jackiewicz, CEO of USC’s Keck Medical Center, said: “We have to become experts at managing data.” However, managing the data is only part of the equation- asking the right questions of the data is also essential. In this spirit, here we will ask:

-          What is (and can) being done with all of this data?

-          What questions are being asked, and what can we ask?

-          How do we take mountains of this data and translate it into clinically relevant outcomes?

-          Where are the largest commercial life science opportunities in Big Data over the next 5 years?

-          How are companies in the LA area merging Big Data and healthcare to generate value for themselves and for consumers?
