So, OBR is organizing an SEO Workshop. Great! But what exactly is SEO? And why would I want to know about it as an academic scientist or an industry professional?
Well, have you ever wondered how you can increase your Internet presence? Perhaps you have a blog with clever scientific ideas to share or a new product that you would like to promote. You need to ensure that as many people as possible see your information on a standard “Google” search. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a process that improves the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “organic” search results. Generally, the higher the placement of a site or more frequently that site is visited, the more visitors it will acquire in a search engine query.
And how DOES a web search engine work? Search engines store a large amount of information about web pages, which they retrieve from the site itself. The leading search engine sites, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing utilize crawlers to browse the web. These crawlers follow every link on a website and index all pages. This indexing software facilitates the development of algorithms used by search engines to generate specific query results. Thus, if you were to search for “Oxbridge Biotech Roundtable” or “OBR” on Google, the search engine would examine its indexed pages and provide the best-matching web page list according to its criteria, often containing the title of the page as well as some documented text from the site.
A variety of techniques can be used to increase SEO for a particular web page, including content, web title selection, and keyword density. Dr. Maria Thompson, a local biotech consultant has extensive experience in optimizing content for search engines. She will lead an SEO workshop organized by the San Diego chapter of OBR. The main aim of this workshop is to help local scientists from academia to industry understand ways to enhance their online presence.
To learn more, please sign up early and attend the SEO Workshop on Thursday, March 21st, at 6:00 pm in Fishman Auditorium at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. Here, you will learn how to apply SEO techniques to your own work with a hands-on demonstration. Don’t miss this opportunity to direct readers to your content. Please note that advance registration is required for this SEO workshop.
